ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) have gained popularity as an alternative to conventional smoking, particularly among adolescents and young adults. E-cigs are often perceived as less harmful but they deliver nicotine and various chemical constituents that could predispose to arrhythmia.

CASE REPORT: This case report describes a previously healthy young adult who developed new-onset atrial fibrillation shortly after e-cig use. The patient had no prior history of cardiovascular disease, stimulant use, or alcohol use. Clinical evaluation and diagnostic workup ruled out structural heart disease and other risk factors for atrial fibrillation.

CONCLUSION: This case highlights a potentially serious cardiovascular complication of e-cig use in young adults. Increasing awareness of this potential risk is essential, particularly among adolescents and non-smokers who may be attracted to e-cigs under a false assumption of safety.
