ABSTRACT

Maternal death remains one of Africa's most painful and unacceptable public health failures. In an era in which African countries are producing world-class scientists, developing sophisticated health technologies and embracing artificial intelligence and digital transformation, no woman should die simply because she became pregnant or gave birth. Yet maternal mortality remains disproportionately concentrated in Africa, where many women continue to die from causes that are largely preventable, treatable and increasingly predictable. In 2023, the African region contributed 72.2% of all maternal deaths worldwide.
